Instruction

For this exercise, we were to shoot a video based on the short film called 'lalin', we first chose to become either a director or a cameraman. Then, we started pairing up with each other to become a 2-man group, so one group has a director and a cameraman. Each group was then given 2 scene to film. Bulan and I became groupmates, she was the cameraman while I was the director. We both ended up shooting for last 2 scenes.

Tutorial

During the tutorial, the whole class went to block D lvl 2 to do the shooting. In each group and each scene, the director and cameraman of that scene each has an assistant. So there will be a director, assistant director (AD), cameraman, and assistant cameraman. While the director and assistant director talk to the actors and actresses about how to act and make sure everything is alright, the cameraman and assistant cameraman need to adjust the position of camera, the brightness and a lot of things.

Before it starts filming, the assistant director needs to make sure the spot is silenced by saying (yelling) it out loud " Silence! Roll camera! Scene 1 Shot 3 Take 1" for example. Then the director needs to shout "Action" and "Cut". Then, they have to relay the video to see if the shot is okay, if it's not, retake the shot; if it's okay, retake one more shot for backup. Mr.Martin had mentioned that we need to have backup shot, even if we already have a good shot.

Refleciton

Experience

I picked to be a director because I'm not really familiar with DSLR yet, and I also enjoy helping the actors and actresses to act the best they can for the shot. This exercise was pretty long and it was nerve-wrecking. But it was fulfilling to get this exercise done as we did practical stuffs during the lesson.


Observation

I think it is best for me to learn how to use DSLR as it will come in handy in this course. Of course, being good at it will be a great advantage to me, while not being able to use DSLR will only make me suffer in the future.

Findings

What I have learned from this class is to be loud when we are working in this field, mainly because there are a lot of workers on the spot and there are a lot of things need to be done right through communication such as the timing of the camera rolling, letting people on the spot to know that we are filming so that they can stay silent while we film.
