Storytelling in Film

Lecture

Story = Explicitly Presented Events + Presumed/ Inferred Events
Plot = Explicitly Presented Events + Added Non-diegetic (narrative) Material

Story is the full sequence of events in a work of a fiction as we imagine to have taken place - in order which they would have occurred in life.
Plot is concerned with how events are related, how they are structured and how the enact changed in the major characters.

In every story and plot, 3-act structure and 5-act structure are very crucial.

1. 3-Act Structure

  • Beginning : Setup/Introduction of a story
  • Middle : Confrontation of a problem in the story
  • End : Resolution of problems

SETUP :

  • To establish the dramatic situation
  • To introduce the main characters
  • Leads to an incident that complicates the story

CONFRONTATION

  • Known as 'Rising Action'
  • To develop obstacles/complications
  • Leads to climax of the story

RESOLUTION (Denouement) :

  • Answer to all obstacles/problems
  • Tying the loose ends
  • Ending of climax

2. 5-Act Structure

  • exposition
  • rising action
  • climax (or turning point)
  • falling action
  • denouement (comedy) or catastrophe (tragedy)

3. Story Arc

A story arc is an extended or continuing storyline in episodic storytelling media such as television, comic books, comic strips, video games, and in some cases, films

The purpose of a story arc : To move a character or a situation from one state to another, to affect a change. Another form of storytelling that offers a change or transformation of character is that of "hero's journey".

Mr.Martin showed us a few videos to let us learn about the 3-act structure, and the appeal side of their videos. My most favorite one was Lalin Moon Short Film. In my opinion, this short film did not fail to make the audience to keep on wondering what is going to happen, which makes the audience to keep on paying attention to the film. Also, it is interesting to see how they used social media thingy without making the film boring, whatever happens on THEIR social media can be seen properly in this film, such as the way they message each other, the way she gains likes on Instagram, and even better, the way they displayed "astronautnut is logging out" when the boy left the restaurant.

Reflection

Experience

After watching videos shown by Mr.Martin, there was a video that I didn't really like, which is the one with couple fighting in the car, and the guy tried to make the girl happy but he did a prank by putting spider in her car . It was good but it didn't seem pleasant to me, the way the girl got into car accident because of a prank and the way the guy got stabbed into the eye, these 2 things seem way too painful for me to handle.

Observation

I was able to see the 3-act structure clearly in the videos and also I have learned that things don't just don't end after the climax, there is always a little bit more of the video at the end to show how they resolved the problem.

Findings

In order to make a good story/plot in film, 3-act structure or 5-act structure is very important. The way they convey the story too can affect the appeals of the whole thing. There will be a lot of things to consider when it comes to making a good story, and this is why we have to pay more attention when we make stories.
