Lecture

27/03/2018 (Tuesday)
For this module, we were instructed to download Unity for the software:
1. 2D Game Kit (More popular nowadays especially for mobile games)
2. Cinemachine (Gives cool camera)
3. Post Processing
4. Timeline (Let you merge scenes like how we do in Adobe Premiere Pro)
5. Octane (Gives beautiful rendering)

- Our project in this semester is to create side-scrolling game, known as 2D games or side scroller. Side-scrolling game is a video game where game play action is viewed from a  side-view camera angle. Onscreen characters generally move from the left side of the screen to the right.
- Our lecturer told us to explore game concepts. Game concept and concept art, again are two different things.
- Tilemap is a very popular technique in 2D game development, consisting of building the game world or level map out of small, regular-shaped images called tiles. We have to practise this too in this semester.
- Grey Box is a process of blocking out all the features in your map. (With simple geometric shapes)

Things to consider when designing a game:
1. Target Audience
2. Type of Game
3. Genre
4. Era (which falls upon target audience)
5. Fun in game
6. USP (Unique selling point)

- Always have a purpose in game.

Concept Art, a form of illustration used to convey an idea for use in films, video games, animation, comic books, or other media before it is put into the final product. In order to practise this:
1. Look for inspiration
2. Composition
    - Rule of Third
    - Golden ratio
3. Identify color / color balance
4. Research in colors, look and feel.
5. Perspective
6. Depth

A great game designer > creates playful situation

How/ What happens > Affects someone > In pursuit of difficult game > How he or she changes.

Element of a game lies in the story. Exposition > Conflict > Climax > Resolution

Element of a game : Gameplay
- Challenge
- Strategy
- Chance (Chance to prolong the life, to keep the player in the game)
- Choice
- Luck

29/03/2018 (Thursday)
    After having the lecture, we had some fun playing card games, but we had to create new games with the cards. I was in a group with Abigail, Sharon and Hui Li in order to create a game called 'Joker". We came up with the idea of distributing the 52 cards evenly to all 4 players. When the players get the cards, they are not allowed to show other players what cards they have, there is definitely a player with the joker card. The players then need to take one card from the player before them and throw out 2 cards in every round, the 2 cards need to have the same color and same number. Eventually, the player with the Joker card loses. If the players do not have 2 cards with same number and same color, thus cannot throw out any card, they can just say 'Pass'.

To sum this all up, the...
1. Objective: To not have the Joker card at the end of the game and try to finish the cards on hand as quick as possible.
2. Challenges: The chances of throwing out the cards with same number AND color may be hard. Plus, the players are challenged to read the players' facial expression when getting their card in every round.
3. Reward and Punishment (Chance): The chance is to be able to throw out as many card as can. Also, the player has chance to let the other players to take out their Joker card. Players too has chance of taking the Joker card from other players and eventually losing the game.
4. Element of Choice: The choices are in how the players arranged their card as the other players will be taking their card in every round. Also, which cards to throw out and which card to take from other players.
5. Luck: The luck lies in the distribution of the cards, whether the players have good cards in hand, or whether the Joker card is with them. Also, the luck of taking the card from other players. Sometimes, the player may be able to take card that can forward their game plays. For the ones with Joker card too, it can be a good chance for the other players to take their Joker card.
6. Strategy:  While playing this game, the players have to control their facial expression when their cards are being taken by the other players. It is like poker face, when other players are going to take their Joker card, the player shouldn't be looking happy as it will be very obvious.

Feedback

Mr.Razif mentioned that the game we created was lack of the drive for the players to bring the game forward.

Lecture

03/04/2018 (Tuesday)
We have learned about project management in today's class, we learned about agile and scrum.

Project Planning
- task mitigation
- sprint
- ownership

Game Design is the backbone of the game.

Project Management
1. Break up the task with sticky notes. (with a chart of Plan, To do, Done, Approved)
2. Set priorities (P1, P2 and P3).

When the to-do tasks are done, move the sticky notes from 'To Do' to 'Done', then move on with the other to-do tasks.

The beginning of sprint is planning and the end of sprint is review.

Tutorial

05/04/2018 (Thursday)
We had to create a game again today, with deck cards, dices and dominos. The game that we have made up was:
1. Shuffle the cards and each player take ONE card.
2. The player with the highest number gets to roll the dice.
3. The player then get to take out the dominos that have the same number as the dice. (ps: Each player has 7 dominos, 4 players for the game)
4. Take a new card for a new round.
5. Repeat the steps...The player who finish the dominos first is the winner.

- Objective: To finish taking out all the dominos in hand.
- Challenges: To get the number (dice) which is same as the domino we have.
- Reward and Punishment (Chance): The winner gets to roll the dice and take out the domino while the loser don't get to roll the dice nor taking out their domino.
- Element of Choice: Which domino to take out.
- Luck: Getting the highest number of cards, and getting a good number on dice.
- Strategy: Taking out the dominos that have same number as the dice (Don't miss out any as the player is allowed to throw out as many as they want, as long as the number matches)

Lecture

10/04/2018 (Tuesday)
- There are other software that can be used for game animation such as Dragon Bones and Spine.
- As for concept art, Krita is free to be used and may be better choice than Adobe Photoshop.
- When starting out for concept art, paint the silhouette for characters, don't need all the details. Just silhouette is dine. We can start sketching too but don't finalize yet.
- When we do design for 2D games, do not add any patterns to the characters such as patterns on the clothes as it will be a pain to animate all of them.

Concept Art
1. Silhouette
2. Add white lines (Details)
3. Lower the opactiy
4. Number all the characters (for convenience)

- Can use purple color for shadow.
- Yellow + white = highlight.
- Hate to add main light source and shadow to make the concept art look better.

Tutorial

12/04/2018 (Thursday)
- Unity > New Project (3D)
- Game Object > 3D > Cube (x,y,z)
- Make sure that z is 0 (same depth if want to make them collide)
- Add component > Physics > Rigidbody (To make the objects fall on the plane)
- Add component > New script

About new script
- Public class is a function
- Void Start () is also a function
- Type your instruction in {}
- Anything you put outside {} will not be executed
- When you want to make your character move, you have to put the 'speed' in. Eg: public speed = 10;
- Use '//NAME' so that we don't get confused during the game coding.
- + velocity to make the characters move faster.
- When use the camera, makes sure the character and camera are aligned.

Tutorial

Import Cinemachine (from asset store) into Unity.
In Unity:
- Cinemachine > 2D Camera > Put main camera under cm vam1
- On the right side, click on the follow. Body > adjust Screen X or Y

To collect item
- (At the bottom) Create > Prefab > Drag the 3D Object (item) into Prefab folder.
- (Only Prefab) Change the settings for the item then go to Inspector > Apply. Next time, whenever we duplicate the prefab (by dragging it to the scene), we don't have to change the settings anymore.
- Add component > New script

In the script
void OnCollisionEnter (Collision other)}
if  (others.gameObject.tag == "Player"){
     print ("hit");
     Destroy (others.gameObject);   >>>>item disappears
     //Destroy (gameObject);

To make the object float
-remove rigidbody
void OnTriggerEnter (Collider others){
Unity > item > Sphere Collider > Is Trigger \

To add effects into the Unity
- Add component > Effects > Particle System
public class ItemCollect: MonoBehaviour {
public GameObject explosion;

Instantiate (explosion,others.gameObject.transform.position,others.gameObject.transform.rotation);

Extra Notes:
- Download assets from assets store and import into Unity scene to use it.
- If no gravity, object doesn't move.
- Usually (with gravity), object moves when collides.
- If don't want item to float, don't put gravity.
